Born in South Africa, company president Lindy Lieberman was on a trip home in 1994 when she discovered the vibrant colors and luxurious textures of Baby Mo's world class mohair in a self-help tapestry weaving project. Lindy was bolstered by the excitement of working with such wonderful people and spectacular products. The opportunity to contribute to this self-empowerment venture was a wonderful way to remain involved in her native land. Her enthusiasm in regard to the animal and environementally friendly aspect of Baby Mo's hand crafted designs using old world techniques was undeniable, and she enthusiastically initiated Baby Mo USA.
Baby Mo's spectacular kid mohair products are handmade by a brilliant artisan group in the Mohair Capital of the World near Mandela Bay, South Africa. Mohair is the natural hair of the Angora goat. Introduced first by Colonel John Henderson to South Africa in 1838, Angora goats thrive in the South African sunny climate. Here the farmers have improved the breed. It is well-established that South African Baby Mo (kid) mohair far surpasses other mohair found in different regions of the world today.
Baby Mo's goats are free-range, and low energy utilisation during the manufacturing process and product care create products that are environmentally-friendly. These products are also animal-friendly: Shearing at 6 months of age and every 6 months thereafter is essential to the goats well-being. And, the younger the animal, the finer the fur. Baby Mo uses only the first two shearings of the kid / baby goat hair. This is the softest of all mohair.
Baby Mo's worker-owned factory began with economically-disadvantaged people who learned and mastered the craft of hand weaving and looming, becoming the skilled artisans they are today. They now proudly produce the finest Baby Mohair products for today's world market.
